What Is a HEPA Filter?

HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air.

A HEPA filter is a dense, pleated mat of fine glass fibres. Air passes through it. Particles do not — or most of them don’t, depending on the grade.

How it works — 4 mechanisms

1. Impaction Larger particles (above 1 micron) can’t follow airflow curves. They travel straight and hit a fibre. They stick.

2. Interception Mid-size particles follow the airflow but pass close enough to a fibre to get caught. No collision needed.

3. Diffusion Tiny particles (below 0.1 micron) move randomly — Brownian motion. This random path increases the chance of hitting a fibre.

4. Sieving Very large particles simply can’t fit through the gaps between fibres.

At 0.3 microns, particles are hardest to catch — small enough to escape impaction, large enough to avoid diffusion. This is called the Most Penetrating Particle Size (MPPS). HEPA ratings are always measured at this worst-case size.

EN 1822 Standard

The international standard for HEPA filters is EN 1822 standard, published by the European Committee for Standardization. It classifies filters from H10 to U17. In India, this is the benchmark used by pharmaceutical, hospital, and cleanroom procurement teams.
