Quick answer: An AC air filter catches dust, pollen and fibres before air reaches the cooling coil. Clean reusable split AC filters every 2 to 4 weeks in dusty months and dry them fully in shade. Replace disposable ducted filters every 1 to 3 months, or as soon as they clog or tear.

When an AC stops cooling well, check the filter first. It costs nothing to look. A clogged one causes weak airflow, longer run times and a higher electricity bill, and plenty of “AC not cooling” complaints end with a 10-minute wash.

This guide covers the AC air filter from start to finish: what it does, the main types, how MERV and G4/F7 ratings work, how to measure the size, how to clean it, when to replace it, and what to tell a manufacturer when you need custom or bulk filters for an office, hospital or plant.

Indian conditions matter here. Dust storms, construction and winter smog load filters much faster than the manual’s default schedule assumes.

What an AC air filter does

Every AC pulls warm room air through a return path. The air passes through the filter first, then over the evaporator coil, where it gives up heat and moisture. Then it returns to the room.

The filter has 3 jobs:

  • Keeps dust off the evaporator coil. A dusty coil transfers heat poorly, so the unit runs longer to reach the same temperature.
  • Removes particles from the air: dust, pollen, pet hair, textile fibres and larger soot particles.
  • Keeps airflow steady, which protects the blower motor and the compressor.

Fine dust that slips past a worn or missing filter settles on the coil and in the drain tray. When that dust gets damp, mould and bacteria grow on it. That’s the source of the musty smell many people notice when the AC starts.

A filter only works while air can pass through it. Once it clogs, airflow drops, and most of the problems later in this guide follow from that.

Which AC do you have?

The right filter depends on the system, so identify yours first.

  • Split AC: the most common home unit in India. The indoor unit has 1 or 2 washable mesh filters behind the front panel.
  • Window AC: one foam or mesh filter sits behind the front grille and slides out.
  • Cassette and ducted AC: common in offices, shops and clinics. Filters sit at the return grille or inside the air handler. They’re usually panel or pleated types, and many are disposable.
  • Commercial and industrial HVAC (AHU): panel filters work as pre-filters, followed by bag filters. Hospitals, cleanrooms and labs add HEPA filters as the final stage.
  • Car AC: uses a cabin filter. See our Car AC Filter Guide.

Some newer split ACs add a second-stage filter, such as a PM2.5, anti-bacterial or deodorising filter. These have their own care and replacement rules. Read your manual before washing anything other than the plain mesh filters.

Washable mesh filters use nylon or polypropylene mesh. They stop hair, lint and coarse dust and add very little resistance to airflow. They don’t catch fine particles. Replace them when the mesh stretches or tears, or when the frame bends.

Synthetic panel filters (G3 or G4) are a fibre pad in a cardboard or metal frame. They’re cheap, and they work best as a pre-filter that protects a finer filter behind them. See Panel Filters.

Pleated filters fold the media to fit more surface area into the same frame. That gives finer filtration and longer life at reasonable airflow resistance. They’re common in offices and clinics. See Pleated Filters.

Bag filters (pocket filters) hang fine-fibre pockets in the airstream. The large surface area gives high dust capacity, usually in the F7 to F9 range, which is why AHUs use them. See Bag Filters.

HEPA filters (H13 and H14) are the highest efficiency class. They need a pre-filter ahead of them and a blower built for the extra resistance. A standard split AC can’t take one. See HEPA Filters.

Activated carbon filters adsorb gases and odours, such as cooking smells and vehicle exhaust. They capture very little dust, so pair them with a particle filter. Life depends on the gas load, so ask your supplier for an estimate. See Carbon Filters.

Dusty cities benefit from staging. A G4 panel in front of an F7 bag filter is a common AHU setup. The cheap pre-filter takes most of the dust load, so the expensive filter lasts longer. Our Coarse Filter Guide covers pre-filter selection.

AC air filter ratings explained

Three rating systems appear on quotations and spec sheets.

MERV (1 to 16) comes from ASHRAE Standard 52.2. It’s common on residential filters and imported products. A higher number means finer particles are captured.

G and F classes (G4, M6, F7, F9) come from EN 779. ISO 16890 replaced that standard in 2018 and classifies filters as ISO Coarse, ISO ePM10, ISO ePM2.5 and ISO ePM1. Indian quotations and tenders still use the G and F labels widely, so you’ll see both.

HEPA grades (H13, H14) come from EN 1822. H13 captures at least 99.95% of the most penetrating particle size. H14 captures at least 99.995%.

As a rough guide, G4 sits around MERV 6 to 8 and F7 around MERV 13. The test methods differ, so treat these as approximate matches. Ask the supplier for a datasheet that lists the test standard, the initial pressure drop and the recommended final pressure drop.

Higher rating and airflow

Denser media resists airflow more. A ducted unit built around a G4 panel can lose enough airflow to cool poorly after a switch to an F7 pleated filter. Datasheet values vary by product, but an F7 filter commonly has roughly double the initial pressure drop of a G4 panel at the same airflow.

Before upgrading, check 2 things: the unit’s rated external static pressure, and the filter’s initial pressure drop in pascals (Pa) at your airflow. If the filter and the rest of the duct system together exceed what the blower can handle, airflow falls. Ask an HVAC technician to measure airflow after the change.

If you’re unsure, give your supplier the unit’s model number and duct size.

Does an AC air filter improve air quality?

Somewhat, and how much depends on the type. A washable mesh filter stops hair and coarse dust. It does little for pollen or smoke particles.

Pleated and F7-class filters capture much finer particles, provided the blower can handle them. For PM2.5 and smoke in a specific room, a standalone HEPA purifier does more. Our best HEPA air filter machine guide covers those.

No particle filter removes gases or odours. Activated carbon does that. A dirty filter also releases trapped dust back into the airstream when disturbed, which is one more reason to clean or replace it on schedule.

How to find the right AC air filter size

  1. Find the filter. On a split AC it’s behind the front panel. On ducted systems it’s at the return grille or in the air handler.
  2. Remove it and measure length, width and thickness in mm.
  3. Measure the slot as well, since old filters shrink and deform.
  4. Note the frame: frameless, cardboard, galvanised steel or aluminium.
  5. Check the arrow on the frame. It shows airflow direction.
  6. Photograph the filter and the unit label before ordering.

Inch sizes are often nominal. A filter sold as 16 x 25 x 1 inch typically measures about 15.75 x 24.75 x 0.75 inch. Common AHU panel sizes include 592 x 592 mm and 610 x 610 mm in 25, 48 or 50 mm thickness. Confirm against your own unit.

Small errors matter. A filter 5 mm too small leaves a gap at the edge, and unfiltered air flows around it. That air carries dust straight to the coil. For non-standard slots, order custom-cut or custom-framed filters and send the photo along with the measurements.

AC air filter cleaning: how to do it properly

AC air filter cleaning takes about 15 minutes of work plus drying time. It’s the cheapest maintenance an air conditioner gets, and it applies to reusable nylon mesh and foam filters. Pleated, bag and HEPA filters get replaced, because water damages the media.

What you need

A soft brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment, lukewarm water below about 40°C, mild dish soap, a clean towel, a shaded spot and a stable stool.

Before you start

Switch off the AC and turn off power at the isolator or plug. Check the manual for the number of filters and where they sit. Some second-stage filters, such as PM2.5 or anti-bacterial filters, have different care rules and shouldn’t be washed the way mesh filters are.

Split AC filter cleaning, step by step

  1. Open the front panel and lift the mesh filters out. Mark them L and R with a permanent marker on the frame, and note which side faces the room.
  2. Tap or vacuum off loose dust first. Wetting thick dust turns it into a paste that packs into the mesh.
  3. Rinse under lukewarm running water from the coil side, so dust leaves in the direction it entered.
  4. For greasy dust, soak the filter for 10 minutes in water with a few drops of dish soap, then brush gently.
  5. Rinse until the water runs clear.
  6. Shake off the water and dry fully in shade. Allow a few hours. Hot sun can warp the frame.
  7. While the filters dry, wipe the front panel and filter slots with a damp cloth. Don’t spray water into the unit, because the electronics sit behind the panel.
  8. Refit only when dry. A damp filter grows odour and can drip.
  9. Run the AC for 10 minutes and check the airflow at the vents.

Window and cassette AC

For a window AC, slide out the filter behind the front grille and follow the same steps. Foam holds more water, so press it between 2 towels. Twisting tears it. For a cassette AC, open the intake grille, unclip the mesh and clean it the same way. Ducted systems usually use disposable filters, so replace those.

Mistakes that damage filters

  • Running the AC with no filter
  • Using hot water, a pressure washer, bleach, thinner or petrol
  • Scrubbing hard or using a stiff brush
  • Refitting a damp filter
  • Washing a disposable filter
  • Reusing torn, yellowed or brittle mesh, which sheds fibres into the coil

After cleaning

Hold the dry filter up to a light. If light shows evenly through the mesh, it’s clear. If the musty smell stays after a full wash, the evaporator coil or drain tray probably needs servicing by a technician. Book a full service once a year, ideally before summer.

How often to clean or replace an AC air filter

SettingInterval
Split or window AC (washable)Clean every 2 to 4 weeks in heavy use
Home ducted AC (disposable)Replace every 1 to 3 months
Homes with pets, smokers or heavy dustCheck every 2 weeks
Offices and shopsInspect monthly, replace as needed
Commercial and industrial AHUReplace by pressure drop

Treat these as starting points. Your usage and your air set the real schedule. Run the AC 10 hours a day in June near a construction site, and a mesh filter can clog in 2 weeks. Run it a few hours a day in a clean room, and monthly may be enough.

The light test works well. Hold the filter up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, clean or replace it.

For AHUs, follow pressure drop rather than the calendar. Manufacturers specify a final pressure drop, and a differential pressure gauge across the filter bank shows when you reach it. Values vary by product. Many G4 panels list a final pressure drop of about 150 to 250 Pa, and F7 bag filters about 250 to 450 Pa. Use the number on your product’s datasheet. Replacing early wastes filters. Replacing late wastes energy.

When to replace the filter

Replace the filter when:

  • The mesh is torn or stretched
  • The frame is bent or broken
  • Odour stays after a full wash
  • The filter looks grey even when clean
  • The mesh is yellowed, stiff or brittle
  • It is a disposable type

Keep a spare set of mesh filters. You can swap in the clean pair and let the used pair dry, so the AC never runs unfiltered.

Signs of a dirty AC air filter

  • Weak airflow at the vents
  • The room takes longer to cool
  • A musty smell when the AC starts
  • Visible dust on the filter or around the vents
  • Ice on the indoor coil
  • A rising electricity bill

Low airflow lets the coil get cold enough to freeze the moisture on it. A frozen coil cools poorly and can drip water when it thaws. The US Department of Energy says replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower an AC’s energy use by 5% to 15%.

If you find a frozen coil, switch the AC to fan mode for a few hours to thaw it, clean the filter, then restart. If it freezes again, call a technician, because low refrigerant can also cause it. Long periods of restricted airflow strain the blower motor and compressor and shorten their life.

Filter schedule for Delhi NCR

  • April to June: dust storms and long AC hours. Check every 2 weeks.
  • July to September: humid monsoon air. Dry filters fully, and use the self-clean or fan mode if your unit has one.
  • October to January: smog season. Mesh filters won’t stop PM2.5, so use a HEPA purifier in bedrooms and check pleated and bag filters for loading.
  • Before summer: book a full service.
  • Nearby construction: check weekly.

What affects the price of AC air filters

Price depends on size, media type, efficiency class, frame material, quantity, and whether the size is standard or custom. Pleated and bag filters cost more per piece than panels, and HEPA costs the most. Bulk orders lower the per-piece price. Send dimensions, class and quantity to get an accurate quote.

Buying AC air filters for offices, hospitals and plants

A mismatched filter causes repeat problems: air leaking around the frame, high pressure drop and early clogging. Send complete details with your enquiry:

  • Dimensions (length x width x thickness in mm)
  • Efficiency class (G4, F7, HEPA and so on)
  • Frame material and type
  • Quantity and delivery location
  • Operating conditions: temperature, humidity, dust load, chemical exposure
  • A photo or part number of the current filter

Ask any supplier these questions: Which standard was the filter tested to? What are the initial and final pressure drops? When should it be changed? Can you send a sample? What is the lead time for custom sizes?

Fiilters is an ISO certified manufacturer with 10+ years of experience. We supply panel, pleated, bag, HEPA and carbon filters in custom sizes, in bulk, across India. Browse our Commercial Air Filters and Pre-Filters, or read about HVAC filter manufacturing in Delhi.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean an AC air filter?

Every 2 to 4 weeks for washable split and window AC filters during heavy use. In dusty areas, check them every 2 weeks.

How do I clean an AC air filter at home?

Switch off the AC, remove the filter, brush off loose dust, rinse in lukewarm water with mild soap, and dry fully in shade before refitting.

Can I wash any AC air filter?

Only mesh and foam filters. Replace pleated, bag and HEPA filters when they clog.

Does a dirty AC air filter reduce cooling?

Yes. It restricts airflow, which lowers cooling and can freeze the coil.

Can I run my AC without a filter?

You can, but dust collects on the coil and blower, and cooling and odour problems follow. Refit a clean filter as soon as possible.

Is a higher-rated AC air filter better?

Only if the blower can handle the extra resistance. Match the rating to the system and check the pressure drop on the datasheet.

How long does a washable AC filter last?

Until the mesh stretches, tears, yellows or stiffens. With gentle, regular washing that’s often a few years, depending on dust and handling.

Can I get custom-size AC air filters?

Yes. Send your dimensions, efficiency class and quantity for a quote.
